How to create your own comic book: a step-by-step guide for beginners

Have you ever wondered how to create your own comic book from scratch? Whether you’re an artist, a writer, or just love creative storytelling, creating comics is one way to bring your imagination to life.
However, it’s not that easy; it requires logic and working with text and images. It’s a unique form.

You don’t have to work for Marvel or DC to get started; it will come with time 🙂 For now, all you need is a story and a little bit of skill in planning images and text. Here is a complete beginner’s guide on how to create a comic book from start to finish.

  1. Start with the plot

Every great comic book starts with an idea. It could be a superhero story, a drama based on real life, or even a funny adventure of your cat.

Ask yourself:

What story do I want to tell?

Who are my main characters?

Write down every thought, even the most random ones—they all fuel your creativity.
This part is similar to what a traditional writer does.

  1. Choose whether you want to go with the flow or have a planned storyline.

The same applies to books; some prefer to have everything planned out, while others prefer to write as they go and believe that the story will unfold on its own.
Personally, I like to have a planned world, but then I modify it repeatedly as I go along. So I combine both worlds.

  1. Choose whether you draw right away or only when you have a definite plot.

I often draw right after coming up with a concept for the world. On the one hand, this frees my creativity, helps me merge with my world, and understand it better.
On the other hand, if you change the plot, even a little, or improve a concept, it becomes a big problem. Text is easier to improve than images. At least
for me, I’m not that skilled at drawing. If you order images or generate them with the help of artificial intelligence, improvements require additional costs.

  1. Understand that a comic is like a screenplay

Before you start drawing, plan your story like a movie. Comics are a combination of text and images, so a screenplay will help you keep things organized.

If you think of it as scenes from a movie, there’s a good chance you’ll draw more interesting frames.

  1. An image is also text:

An image is also text here. There is little room for words in a comic book. There is no need to describe places because they can be seen, no need to describe people because they can be seen. There is no need to write what they are doing, whether they are running fast or slow, because it can be seen. We lose a lot of text. However, dialogues are a must. And since they are a must, they must be concise and compact. A sentence must be shorter than in a book but contain the same content.
Remember: readers should be able to understand what is going on without reading a single word. Clarity always wins over complexity.
Don’t forget about sound effects! A well-placed “BAM!” or “WHOOSH!” adds extra energy to your pages.

  1. Design your characters

Now for the fun part — character design.
Think about what makes each character unique: their clothes, hairstyle, and facial expressions. Make sure readers will be able to recognize who is who right away.

Pro tip: use reference photos or sketch different versions until you find a look that feels right.

  1. Plan your layout (thumbnails)

Before you move on to the final version of your artwork, create thumbnails—small sketches of the layout for each page. This is one of the best tips for beginners on how to make comics.

Thumbnails will help you determine:

How each panel flows

Where to place speech bubbles

Which moments deserve large, dramatic panels

  1. Choose your medium

You can draw traditionally on paper or digitally. You can order graphics traditionally or digitally. For me, it’s only digital, but there are people who prefer paper.
Choose a drawing style and stick to it throughout the comic. Personally, if I could, I would make the graphics as realistic as possible, almost like photographs. But I can’t draw like that. There are people who prefer the Japanese manga style. Others prefer the Marvel style, everyone has different preferences.
